Discover the best of the Murray on this epic three-day getaway.

  • Fly, drive or train into the twin cities of Albury Wodonga, the perfect blend of country pace and city lifestyle, featuring historic buildings, vibrant shopping precincts and tree-lined gardens. It's also an excellent base for cycling, mountain biking and exploring rail trails around the shores of Lake Hume.

Take some time to get to know Australia's largest rural city, then enjoy a leisurely lunch with views across the Murray River at The River Deck Cafe. Climb Monument Hill later to get the full picture; it's got some cracking views.

If you're a golfer, you're set for the day at Thurgoona Country Club Resort and Commercial Golf Club, designed by five-time British Open champion Peter Thomson.

Art lovers and history buffs are also in luck. Catch a visiting exhibition by renowned Australian or international artists at the excellent Murray Art Museum Albury (MAMA), and discover Australia's migrant history at the Bonegilla Migrant Experience. Built in 1947, Block 19 Bonegilla was Australia's first migration reception centre.

Late afternoon calls for a tipple at Level One Wine Bar or a refreshing ale at The Goods Shed craft brewery. Dinner (should you nab a reservation) will take you inside the historic former Wodonga railway station to Miss Amelie. Here, a modern European menu awaits under the eye of head chef Isaac Rich, who took the reins from his mentor, renowned chef David Kapay, in 2023.

  • Another day, another twin city. Day two sees you getting to know Yarrawonga Mulwala and expansive Lake Mulwala, a hotspot for boating and water sports. Make the most of it and learn to waterski or kayak, or drop a line into the lake and catch your own dinner.

Otherwise known as Sun Country, the area features plenty of sunshine and a wide-open landscape. Grab your basket and follow the Farm Gate Trail, stocking up on fresh local produce from farm gates for the journey ahead.

Venture into Barmah National Park, home to the largest River Red Gum forest in the world and hundreds of species of native birds. The national park is another top spot for outdoor adventures – it's a high-adrenaline day in Sun Country.

You wouldn't be in the Murray region if there wasn't a world-class golf course, and Black Bull and Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club Resort are today's chance to improve your handicap. There are plenty of great places to stay nearby too, from tropical resorts (Tokemata Retreat) to stunning lake houses (Moodemere Lake House, in Rutherglen).

  • A couple of hours from Mulwala, you'll find Echuca, the heart of the northern Murray region. This is Australia's paddle steamer capital, and it's worth a week all by itself. Equal parts history and adventure, this is where you come if you want to ride a restored paddle steamer, or stay on a luxury houseboat.

Dive right into the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre, and learn about Echuca's long history as one of the busiest ports on the Murray. Spot the historic PS Emmylou paddle steamer from the riverbank, or book ahead for a dinner and overnight cruise. In the afternoon, give paddle-boarding a try, or follow the Backroads Trail for cellar doors and local produce. You can also add a side trip to the beautiful Hatta-Kulkyne National Park, with a tour by Murray Offroad Adventures.

For your last night, step out of the past and into the present for a dinner to remember at Morrisons, nestled amid bushland right on the riverfront. Then let the gentle ripples of this mighty river lull you to sleep on your luxury houseboat.
