Overview

An easy 3 hour drive from Melbourne and 30 minutes from neighbouring Mount Buller, Mount Stirling is criss-crossed with more than 68 kilometres of maintained trails that wind through sheltered woodlands of Alpine Ash and Snow Gums.

Back-country skiing, snowboarding and snow play

Intermediate to advanced skiers and snowboarders can trek to the summit across pristine fresh tracks and through stunning alpine landscape. Mountain huts and dedicated ski patrol services support your adventure. For relaxed snow play, Mount Stirling's three toboggan areas offer maximum family fun.

Mountain trails

Mt Stirling has a range of trails for snowshoers to explore. Be rewarded with unrestricted views of the surrounding region from the summit. Cross-country skiers will love the freedom and untouched terrain. Take your pick of tree runs, powder bowls and groomed trails that stretch between the Stirling Summit and Telephone Box Junction.

Visit Craig's Hut, the famous cattlemen's hut featured in The Man From Snowy River. Other huts dotted around the resort provide great bases for ski touring.

Recharge

Get going with a lesson or two at the ski school, recharge at the bistro, or warm up by the fire at the public shelter. Entry to Mount Buller and Mt Stirling are included in the one entry fee, and it's an easy drive, ski or snow shoe walk between the resorts.

Mount Stirling's only accommodation is a true alpine experience. The resort has a number of refuge huts and snow camping areas, as well as a permanent alpine camp featuring a central tepee with a pot belly stove, cooking facilities and insulated tents.

Getting there

  • From Melbourne, travel east along the Eastern Freeway and then the Maroondah Highway; head north at Chirnside Park and drive through Yarra Glen and Yea. Goulburn Valley Highway leads through Mansfield towards Mount Buller. Take Circuit Road up to the resort.
