Overview

There's no better way to connect with the river than to be in it. Choose fast-paced river adventure at the Murray Gates section of the Upper Murray, follow one of the region's inspiring canoe trails, or explore Gunbower Island and the Barmah wetlands on a guided canoe trip.

A beginner's guide

Take it easy at the lower Murray River, around Wentworth, an area free from rapids and suitable for beginners. Hire a canoe and soak up the calming river atmosphere as you paddle past red gums. Pull into shady riverside clearings for a bush picnic or a spot of fishing.

Wetlands getaway

Venture into the depths of the Barmah Forest near Echuca Moama. Cruise through the calm waters of the floodplains to the serene sounds of native birds and frogs. Visit in spring, when the river floods, and paddle your way through the trees. Not sure where to start? Choose from one of the four designated Murray River canoe trails, which all have easy water access.

Discover the otherworldly beauty of Lake Mulwala on a guided kayak tour and cool off on sandy river beaches off Gunbower Creek. Follow the recreational trail at Safe's Lagoon on Gunbower Island to spot the native birds and try to reel in a famous Murray cod. Next stop, Mildura, where the Hattah-Kulkyne National Park and Kings Billabong offer excellent canoeing options.

Massive Murray Paddle

Sign up to the iconic Massive Murray Paddle (Murray Marathon), one of the longest canoe races in the world, which stretches 404 kilometres from Yarrawonga to Swan Hill. Raise money for charity and test your stamina against the hundreds of participants who flock to the five-day event each year in December.

Plan before you go: Be sure to check weather and terrain conditions and pack plenty of water before you embark on an outdoor adventure. Stay up-to-date with the latest warnings and advice via the Parks Victoria and Vic Emergency websites.
