Overview

Hire your own boat and take the wheel, or climb aboard an iconic paddle steamer to experience Murray River history. Take in the rugged natural surroundings, explore riverbank towns steeped in history, and be recharged by the river's natural beauty.

Gettin' steamed up

Step back in time on a historic 19th-century paddle steamer at Echuca, Mildura or Swan Hill. Watch the boiler being stoked, listen out for the distinctive steam whistle and imagine life as a pioneer trader.

Sign up for a short day cruise on the P.S. Emmylou, or spend a night or two cruising downriver. Get the quintessential Murray experience aboard the P.S. Canberra and cruise from Echuca to Morrisons Winery for a riverside lunch, or board the P.S. Rothbury, Mundoo or Melbourne, departing from Mildura.

A houseboat getaway

Navigate the river at your own pace aboard a houseboat. Stop by at the various restaurants, wineries and golf courses that line the riverbanks and dock at different parts of the river each night. Full instruction is given on boat operation and mooring – all you need to qualify is a current driver's licence. And you won't need to worry about changing tides – water levels on the river remain constant.

Plan before you go: Be sure to check weather and terrain conditions and pack plenty of water before you embark on an outdoor adventure. Stay up-to-date with the latest warnings and advice via the Parks Victoria and Vic Emergency websites.
