Stefano de Pieri
Born in Treviso, near Venice, Stefano De Pieri fused his food memories from his native Veneto and the incredible produce and wine of Mildura in his book and television series A Gondola on the Murray.
Today, Stefano's Restaurant in the Mildura Grand Hotel is lauded by critics, locals and visitors alike, with two chef's hats from the Good Food Guide 2023. Around the corner, Stefano's Cafe and its in-store deli and preserves store offers a taste of Mildura to take home.
Here are Stefano's favourite spots in his cherished Murray region.
1. Mildura Arts Centre and Chaffey House
'Mildura was the centre of Australian sculpture for 30 years,' says Stefano. Some of the evidence is on the grounds of the Mildura Arts Centre, including Ron Robertson-Swann's Beethoven, the precursor to his controversial Vault sculpture. Stefano also recommends visiting Rio Vista Historic House, Mildura's most important heritage building, at the same location.
2. Walk and picnic along the riverfront
Stefano's perfect Mildura day must include a stroll and picnic along the Murray. Start where the paddle steamers depart and walk all the way to Apex Caravan Park, checking out the birdlife and boat life along the way. Before you set off, fill your picnic basket with cheese, Stefano's preserves and other goodies at Stefano's Cafe on Deakin Avenue.
3. National park hikes
Stefano recommends exploring one of the many areas of immense cultural and ecological significance that surround Mildura. Hattah-Kulkyne National Park and Mungo National Park are where you're most likely to run into him.
4. Restaurants
Food is Stefano's passion, and he loves sharing the culinary secrets of the Murray. Got a sweet tooth? He recommends a visit to The Italian for the best cannoli and other sweet and savoury delicacies.
