David Kapay
After working under the likes of Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay in London, chef David Kapay returned home to The Murray, to open Miss Amelie. The modern European restaurant draws on David's time spent living in and exploring the UK and beyond, with a menu that lends itself to the top-quality produce available in The Murray foodbowl each season.
After it was awarded a Good Food Guide 'chef's hat' in 2018, the restaurant grew to include the Little Miss wine bar adjacent.
'We live in the best part of the world and have access to so many beautiful places, right on our doorstep,' David says. Here are some of his favourite spots.
1. Thai Lotus, Albury
Naturally, David is a lover of food and dining out. But despite his fine dining pedigree, he recommends the family-friendly Thai Lotus in Albury, saying it's 'the most authentic Thai food I have found in Australia.'
2. Beechworth
David loves taking time outside with his young family. The village of Beechworth in Victoria's High Country, just a short drive from David's home, is one of their favourite destinations for a day trip. Kids can swim, hike and explore the gold rush streets, and adults will find plenty to enjoy in the area's thriving food and wine scene.
3. Morning coffee
There's always time for good coffee, David says. His two favourite spots for a steaming cup of Joe are drive-thru coffee shop The Coffee Shed; and BeanStation Cafe, which you'll find in Junction Place – Wodonga's historic former train station development – alongside Miss Amelie.
