Overview

With the Yarra River running through its centre and safe, sandy beaches encircling Port Phillip Bay, Melbourne has plenty of opportunities for seaside contemplation or adrenaline-fuelled fun – in, on and beside the water.

Melbourne ahoy

Charter a yacht and sail out into the sparkling waters of Port Phillip. Join a city cruise down the meandering Yarra. Or kick things up a gear on a thrilling kite-board ride in St Kilda.

Paddle power

Hit the rivers, head out onto the bay and explore the city's unique waterways on a kayaking expedition. Take a moonlight paddle under the Bolte Bridge, kayak downstream for a romantic riverside dinner, or spot dolphins as you explore the coastline on a sea kayak adventure.

Beachside summers

Make a splash at the city's popular swimming beaches, including Port Melbourne, South Melbourne, Middle Park, St Kilda, Elwood, Hampton, Brighton, Sandringham, and Williamstown. These main beaches are patrolled by lifesavers on weekends and public holidays during the summer months from November to March.

Poolside year-round

If you like swimming but not sand, join locals and visitors alike at one of Melbourne's numerous swimming pools. Many of them are heated, so you can dive in any time of year.

Plan before you go: Be sure to check weather and terrain conditions and pack plenty of water before you embark on an outdoor adventure. Stay up-to-date with the latest warnings and advice via the Parks Victoria and Vic Emergency websites.
