Victorians love their horse racing and there's plenty to offer the local and international racing fan, whatever the time of year.
The race that stops a nation
For the horse racing fanatic and casual punter alike, there's no greater occasion than the Melbourne Cup. One of the world's richest horse races, the meet is run at Flemington on the first Tuesday in November. Known around the country as 'the race that stops a nation' the cup attracts more than 100,000 punters and is the highlight of the Spring Racing Carnival.
What to wear
No longer just about the horses, the Spring Racing Carnival is now a high profile event on the fashion calendar. With the most glamorous Australian and international stars descending on racecourses and marquees to hobnob with politicians, sports heroes and the business elite, it's a spectator sports event like no other.
Metropolitan and country races
Throughout the year, metropolitan races take place at Flemington, Moonee Valley, Caulfield and Sandown racecourses. Race meets are held all across Victoria at famed racetracks, showcasing high-profile feature races and Country Cups.
