Scenic lookouts

Victoria's High Country has some of Australia's most beautiful alpine scenery, from magical winter scenes of white-capped mountains, grey blue snow gums and rolling snow plains, to summer vistas of green meadows, rushing rivers and gentle lakes, here are some of the best vantage points from which to take in the views.

Mount Buller

The views from the summit of Mount Buller (1,804 metres above sea level) are second to none. During the summer you can park at the summit car park and take a leisurely one-hour (return) walk to the top. Over winter, put on your skis or snowboard and ride any of Mount Buller's 25 lifts for spectacular views.

Mt Stirling

Craig's Hut near Clear Hills on Mt Stirling is a popular destination for horse and mountain bike riders as well as tourers. Accessible via the Circuit Road on Mt Stirling, or via the Howqua Gap Track across from Mount Buller, the hut can also be reached via cross-country ski trails during winter. Check road conditions as there can be seasonal road closures.

Power's Lookout

Providing spectacular vistas of the Upper King Valley and the Alpine National Park, Power's Lookout was once used by bushranger Harry Power to view approaching troopers. Access is via the Whitfield to Mansfield Road 18 kilometres from Whitfield.

Danny's Lookout - Mt Hotham

Take a drive along the spectacular Great Alpine Road from Bright to Omeo, winding your way across the rugged mountain ranges. Pull over at Danny's Lookout, located at the top of Mt Hotham, and take a moment to revel in the sweeping views of the mountains on every side.

Mount McKay

For some of the best views of the High Country, take a detour off the Bogong High Plains Road near Falls Creek, and follow the road near the Rocky Valley Dam up to Mount McKay. At 1,849 metres above the sea level, it is the highest spot in Australia accessible by road. This road is closed during winter due to snow cover.

The Horn at Mt Buffalo

Start at the picnic area and follow the Horn Track up to the lookout, located at the highest point of Mount Buffalo. The walk takes about 45 minutes. Once you get to the top, revel in the superb 360-degree views of the Australian Alps and plateau below.

Tawonga Gap

At 880 metres above sea level the Tawonga Gap lookout provides incredible views to Mount Bogong (Victoria's highest mountain) and over the Kiewa Valley. A little further down the Tawonga Gap road is Sullivans Lookout providing similar, yet closer views.

Precipice Lookout at Dinner Plain

Witness colourful sunsets and soak up the fresh mountain air at the Precipice Lookout, just south of Dinner Plain, which offers spectacular views across the Dargo Valley to Mount Tabletop. A unique geological feature, the western edge of Precipice Plain drops almost vertically to a narrow valley below that joins the Dargo Valley. Access is via the Dinner Plain 4WD track.
