Overview

Paddle out to sea on a kayak and discover the wonders of the Great Ocean Road region. Explore bays, beaches and hidden inlets or take a canoe on the lakes, rivers and estuaries.

Canoeing

For some of Australia's finest flat-water canoeing, take a trip up the coast to the Glenelg River near Nelson. Travel through the striking landscapes of rolling bushland and ancient gorges and on down to the estuary. Well-maintained campsites are available every five to 10 kilometres for those wanting to camp out.

Stop in at Lake Colac, one of south-west Victoria's water sport hubs, for a range of activities including boating, rowing, yachting, water-skiing and windsurfing. For something a little calmer, try a spot of canoeing on Lake Bullen Merri or Lake Gnotuk and soak up the pristine scenery.

Kayaking

Get your adrenaline pumping on a sea kayak in the region's sheltered bays or ride the waves along rugged coastlines. Hire your gear from one of the tour operators at Anglesea, Lorne and Apollo Bay that cater for all levels of experience, skills and adventure tastes. Just starting out? Sign up for lessons instead of a tour.

Kayak to seal colonies

Combine a love of the water with a love of wildlife on a seal kayaking tour. Join a group and paddle out from the coast to a seal colony. Watch as they tumble around in the waves and sun themselves on the rocks. If you're lucky, they'll even swim over to say hello. Tours cater for both beginners and experienced kayakers.
