Overview

For those who love the great outdoors, the Goldfields region has plenty to offer, from bushwalking, cycling and fishing to golf and helicopter flights.

Lakes and trails

Discover the Goldfields by foot or on two wheels. Follow the Goldfields Track through historic towns and see elegant architecture and parks built on the legacy of last century's gold rush.

Spend a day at Ballarat's Lake Wendouree or Bendigo's Lake Weeroona and soak up the outdoor lifestyle. Cycle along the shoreline, take a wander, or hit the water in a kayak. Those looking to go further afield, will enjoy a stroll through quiet bushland to nearby heritage towns.

Explore the Castlemaine to Maldon Trail, almost 18km of historic branchline railway perfect for walking and cycling. The trail bends through bushland and farmland, past some fantastic gold-era historical sites. Stop in Castlemaine for cosy cafés, gourmet restaurants and historic hotels, or enjoy a post-trail bite in the charming village of Maldon.

Trout fishing in...

Head out for the day and find a wide variety of excellent fishing spots. Cast a line for native fish in local streams or fish year-round for trout in one of over a thousand private and public trout lakes in the region.

Fly like a birdie

Improve your stroke on one of the region's scenic and historic golf courses, and if you miss the fairway at least it will be picturesque. For a real bird's eye view jump aboard a helicopter and take in a unique perspective of the region's landscapes.

Plan before you go

Make sure you check weather and terrain conditions and pack plenty of water before you embark on an outdoor adventure. Keep up-to-date with the latest warnings and advice via the Parks Victoria and Vic Emergency websites.
