Overview

Stop in and uncover the unexpected treasures of this charming town on the lands of the Dja Dja Wurrung People. Set at the heart of the Goldfields, Talbot was a thriving centre in the early days of the gold rush, and many historic buildings remain. Visit the Talbot Arts and Historical Museum to see relics and photos, and hear stories from Victoria's 'golden age'.

Stock up and fill up

Time your visit to coincide with the famous farmers' market held on the third Sunday of the month. With more than 100 stalls and up to 2000 people stopping by each month, it's the place to stock up on everything from organic produce, local honey and olives to continental cakes and home-made cheeses.

Bwowse for vintage clothing and collectables in local speciality stores, find that rare hardback in a local second-hand bookshop, and finish the day with a sumptuous dinner at a local eatery or family run winery. While you're in the area, be sure to sample the elegant, cool climate wines at Amherst Winery, winner of a 5-star winery rating in James Halliday's Australian Wine Companion.

Park life

If you're more of an outdoor type, head out to the Paddys Ranges State Park in the Pyrenees Ranges. Here you'll find a wide variety of local flora and fauna including the rare Swift parrot, wallabies, kangaroos and echidnas as well as Quartz Mountain, a massive quartz outcrop. Visit during the springtime and be amazed by the wildflowers. More than 230 species have been recorded in the area including 30 different kinds of orchids.
