Discover an underground wonderland of spectacular limestone formations at Gippsland's ancient Buchan Caves. Underground rivers cutting through limestone rock created the caves almost 400 million years ago.
Professionally guided tours of either Royal Cave or Fairy Cave operate daily. Both caves are lit and have walkways. Royal Cave has calcite-rimmed pools, and in Fairy Cave you will see elaborate stalactites and stalagmites. Tours to 'wild' unlit caves can also be arranged for small groups. The caves are a constant 17 degrees Celsius making the tour a comfortable temperature all year round. Find out about cave tour times and prices at the Parks Victoria website.
Camping and bushwalking
Buchan Caves Reserve is a unique getaway adjoining the stunning caves system. Access to short and long walks in the surrounding bushland and the nearby Snowy River National Park make it an ideal base for a nature based camping holiday. See the abundant native wildlife, which includes kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, and over 60 species of birds.
With scenic picnic spots, a stream-feed pool and hundreds of shady trees, the reserve is the perfect place to pitch a tent on one of 100 grassy campsites. Self-contained cabins are also available. For something a little more unique, try the Buchan Caves Reserve’s Wilderness Retreats. These safari-style tents allow you to immerse yourself in natural surroundings without sacrificing your creature comforts.
