Overview

Within easy distance of Melbourne, Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges have a heap to explore with kids in tow, whether you're here for a day, a weekend or a week.

Green spaces

Integrate a little Australian literary history with a reading of Picnic at Hanging Rock and a visit to the eponymous park. Explore mystical Hanging Rock, calling for Miranda as you go, and picnic at its base.

Visit during sunflower season and pick your own giant flowers. Try easy walks in Creswick National Park, and explore picturesque bird-populated Lake Daylesford by foot or paddle boat.

Markets

Look for local farmers' markets in towns including Woodend (first Saturday of the month) and Kyneton (second Saturday of the month), guaranteed to keep kids of all ages content, with snacks readily available. Trentham's annual Spudfest provides myriad fun family activities and entertainment while spruiking the humble potato. Hot chips all round, please.

Four-legged friends

Here's your chance to explore scenic trails on horseback or on the back of a friendly llama. Look out for koalas and other wildlife in national parks. Tour the historic Creswick Woollen Mill and get up close for pats with the sweet alpacas.
