O'Keefe Rail Trail

Make your way through native bushland and dry forest crossing over bubbling creeks along the way. Ride or walk among gums and box trees, tea trees and wattles, or visit in late winter and springtime to enjoy the abundant wildflowers.

Take a leisurely trip past kangaroos and wallabies grazing near the trail, and see a wide range of bird life including parrots, wrens and honeyeaters.

Stop off at Lake Eppalock for a breather by the water. Cool off with a dip when the weather is warm, or drop a line and cast around for redfin.

Pull in at Axedale for a rest stop, halfway through your journey. Enjoy a picnic by the Campaspe River, keeping a keen eye out for platypus. Head into the village to grab a hearty pub meal at the local Tavern. Once your pedal ends at Heathcote, you can take a trail of a different type, visiting the incredible local wineries and breweries plus natural wonders like Pink Cliffs Reserve.

After recent upgrading works this trail is suited to most types of bikes and levels of rider experience. On-trail water stations can be found at Junortoun and Axedale, and bike repair stations at Junortoun, Heathcote and Axedale.
