Albury Wodonga to Mildura

Experience the mighty Murray River – one of the world's great rivers. Follow its serpentine path from the mountains of the Great Dividing Range in north-east Victoria to the desert country and wide open plains of South Australia. Explore the towns dotted along the river as it makes its way to the ocean, sample local food and fresh produce from Victoria's food bowl, and discover the rich Aboriginal heritage and pioneer history of the region.

    Albury Wodonga to Echuca-Moama

    242 km/150 miles, about 3.25 hours

    The Murray River winds its way from its mountain source to the town of Wodonga, a major inland centre that, with its sister city Albury, straddles the river at the Victoria–New South Wales border. Wodonga is popular with water sports enthusiasts for its close proximity to both the river and the capacious Lake Hume.

    Head east 90 minutes upstream to the river's source and Corryong, the town where the Man From Snowy River legend was born. The road back to Wodonga passes by Tallangatta, and the gateway to some of the best freshwater fishing in Victoria.

    Downstream from Wodonga is the famous wine centre, Rutherglen. The fertile ground and mild climate produce crisp, modern-style whites and robust red wines, plus its famous muscats and tokays. Call in at the Rutherglen Wine Experience & Visitor Information Centre to sample wines produced by leading wineries, including All Saints Estate, Brown Brothers and Gehrig Estate.

    Half an hour downstream is Yarrawonga-Mulwala. Fish for Murray cod, improve your golf handicap at the largest public-access golf course in Australia, water ski, or just relax on the banks of Lake Mulwala while enjoying the famous temperate climate.

    Echuca-Moama to Swan Hill

    153 km/97 miles, about 2 hours

    The world's largest fleet of operating paddle steamers steam along the Murray River and berth at the Port of Echuca, an historic area dotted with cafes, shops and restaurants like Oscar W's.

    Relax on the deck of a paddle steamer, get wet water skiing or swimming, or tee off on one of the many outstanding golf courses. Each year in summer the popular, outdoor Riverboats Music Festival draws thousands of visitors for a weekend of top local and international acts. In winter the local Blues Festival also pulls a crowd.

    Half an hour from Echuca is Barmah National Park, Barmah Wetlands and the biggest stand of river red gum on earth. Explore by car, on foot, on a cruise boat or in a hired canoe. Home to the Yorta Yorta people, this is also a haven for native animals and birds.

    Swan Hill, a town with a rich colonial past that is on display at the Pioneer Settlement, a re-creation of a port town. There are quality golf courses around Swan Hill, as well as great water skiing and fishing.

    Cruise the Murray in a houseboat. Houseboat hire is available at Echuca, Swan Hill, Mildura and Wentworth, with sleek vessels offering all mod cons for solo sailors or groups.

    The journey from Swan Hill to Mildura takes you from river bushland to a stunning desert environment.

    Mildura is an oasis beside the magnificent Murray. Stroll along the riverbanks, or fish, water ski or cruise its wide waters on an historic paddle steamer. The Murray provides a stunning backdrop to restaurants and wineries, including Stefano's restaurant, famous for its use of the best local produce.

    With seemingly perennial sunshine, Mildura is a popular destination for outdoor dining, relaxing in the sun, a round of golf on one of the fine local courses, or joining an annual celebration, such as the Jazz, Food & Wine Festival in November.

    The Murray-Sunset National Park is a stunning park comprising four distinct wilderness zones - billabongs near the Murray River, native pine woodlands, red sand dunes and saltbush flats. See seasonal wildflowers, abundant bird life, red kangaroos, breathtaking sunsets, and the Pink Lakes, which turn a vivid colour in late summer.
