Artful wanderings

A number of small villages peppered across Gippsland add flavour to the arts scene. Yarragon is a browser's delight, and the creative towns of Fish Creek, Metung and Nowa Nowa add a quirky flavour. Visit intimate studios and art galleries where visitors are welcome to browse and buy fine examples of local art and craft, including painting, sculpture, ceramics, woodcrafts, glass, textiles and more.

Join the Phoenix Art Trail, a bushfire recovery project celebrating the creative spirit and resilience of East Gippsland. The newly developed trail, running from the tiny town of Omeo in Alpine country to the coastal village of Mallacoota, links together around 30 artists' studios and galleries. Jump in or out to suit your own itinerary, or follow the trail in its entirety to discover the wealth of creativity the region has to offer.

Enjoy a wide variety of live theatre and music at performing arts centres in Warragul, Traralgon and Sale, as well as at smaller venues across the region. Looking to get a glimpse into the past? Spend a day at a local museum or learn about the region's Indigenous heritage at the Krowathunkooloong Keeping Place.

Kick up your heels

Time your visit to coincide with one of the exciting cultural events taking place during the year. A highlight of the calendar is the Come and Play – All of May, featuring performances and exhibitions across six Gippsland regions throughout the month. Art lovers will also enjoy the Mirboo North Arty Gras in April.

Music abounds in towns, hills and valleys across Gippsland. Let the rhythm move you at local gigs and festivals for all tastes. See local and international musicians at Meeniyan Town Hall, or get into the groove at the Inverloch Jazz Festivals, Paynesville Music Festival and Bruthen Blues & Arts Festival. Fans of new folk, rock and hip hop will be thrilled by acts big and small at the Hills Are Alive festival near Loch Village, NYE festival Beyond the Valley in Warragul and at the family-friendly Inverloch Sounds of Summer festival.
