The Macedon Railway Hotel was originally built in 1865 and has since undergone several renovations and additions.
On Ash Wednesday February 1983 the hotel became a refuge for 300 plus residents, volunteer firefighters, rescue workers and animals escaping from the fires, which destroyed the township. Recognition was paid by the Prince and Princess of Wales on November second, 1985 to the then hotel owners and others who were responsible for saving many lives.
