Homely Long Table’s timber furniture and open-fire augurs for a simple rustic spread. Instead, prepare for an inventive sensory treat of seasonal creations. An entree of cured ocean trout coated in a fine powder of wakame and horseradish is a velvety kapow of salty goodness, accented by locally foraged samphire (sea asparagus) and wisps of lemon verbena meringue. Equally, roasted quail with foie gras, rhubarb and spiced brioche is a deft blend of premium ingredients. Kingfish, crusted on one side with brioche, is balanced by a delicate salad of sorrel, baby turnips, zucchini flower and grape vinaigrette, and Otway pork belly with skate wing, cider-poached apples and Pedro Ximenez sherry is transcendentally good. Desserts keep up: Main Ridge berries with fromage blanc, black sesame and elderflower, or a rich milk chocolate delice, are easily devoured. Staff are attentive and knowledgeable, especially about local wines, which adds to a memorable experience.
