Gippsland
Breathtaking 360-degree sunset vistas way up above the Southern Ocean are the reward for climbing to the summit of Mt Oberon in Wilsons Promontory National Park. Have your camera ready as the sky works its glorious colour magic over the water. Dress warmly and bring a torch to light your return.
Further east along the southern coast, slow the pace to enjoy expansive dusky views at Lakes Entrance. From Jemmy's Point Lookout above the township, gaze over the illuminated Gippsland Lakes and out to Bass Strait. Or take in the serene pink and orange light from the waterfront.
Mornington Peninsula
Pack the car with BBQ and picnic supplies and drive 314 metres above sea level for great family-friendly sunset viewing at Arthurs Seat. Perch at the top to catch bright skies stretching above a glittering Port Phillip Bay and along the peninsula.
Sitting on a dramatic basalt promontory at the tip of the peninsula, Cape Schanck Lighthouse Reserve is exceptionally glow-worthy. Take the boardwalk to the historic 1859 lighthouse and absorb the golden hue from its base above the wild coast.
Phillip Island
Renowned for spectacular pink granite cliffs and ferocious crashing surf, Cape Woolamai brings its A-game as the sun goes down. View glowing skies and luminous cliffs from the walking trails and lookouts, and marvel at the jagged Pinnacles rock formations.
Golden Hour is magical for glow-lovers of all ages at the The Nobbies, a magnificent rocky headland at the southwestern tip of Phillip Island. Stroll the boardwalk as the sun flares over the water and – if you're lucky – spot little penguins returning home at dusk.
Yarra Valley & Dandenong Ranges
Sunset vistas from Mt Donna Buang will have you on a high. Set off by car up to the 1245-metre summit, then ascend the 21-metre lookout on foot. Crimson and blush panoramas span the skies across Melbourne, the Yarra Valley and the Alps.
Equally lofty, SkyHigh Mt Dandenong is the perfect combination of restaurant and sunset viewing spot. Head up through lush fern and forest for sprawling sunset skies across peninsula, city, bay and mountain. Golden moments guaranteed.
Great Ocean Road
Scale the gum-covered hilltop above Lorne to delightfully secluded Teddy's Lookout. With picturesque vistas sweeping out across Bass Strait and below to the mouth of the St George River, Teddy's is a special spot for some Great Ocean Road glow-time.
Wonderful Point Addis is a lesser-known viewing spot with a platform set above sandy beaches and sandstone cliffs. Come to meditate on the big picturesque skies out to sea and along the Great Ocean Road coastline as the colours pop.
Geelong & the Bellarine Peninsula
Wander down to the sand at Ocean Grove for some magical sunset beach time. Turn your head to follow the orange sun as it slowly slips down behind the bluff at Barwon Heads further along the coast.
Easily accessible, Geelong Waterfront is a sunset-viewing winner at night. Sit back and soak up the last of the sun as it spreads its golden fingers. Dusk skies illuminate the reflective waters of sailboat-dotted Corio Bay.
Goldfields
Spread out under the trees for sundowner refreshments atop an extinct volcanic mountain, 745 metres above sea level. Just outside Ballarat, Mount Buninyong is splendid for contemplating big sunset vistas and splashy skies.
Ballarat's lovely Lake Wendouree is a natural fit for sharing twilight moments. Bask in the glow, work the BBQ tongs, take a stroll and let the kids burn energy in the playground as the day says farewell over tree-lined waters.
Daylesford & the Macedon Ranges
Historic Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens is a sweet spot for sunset bathing. High on the summit of an extinct volcano, you'll have panoramic views over Daylesford to the horizon as the light plays on the grass and through the trees.
Catch the falling sun from the Memorial Cross at the summit of Mt Macedon, part of Victoria's Great Dividing Range. The vistas are naturally breathtaking from up here, with striking sunsets and views across the southern plain to the waters of Port Phillip Bay.
Grampians
In the Mallee, the extraordinary reflective surface of 120,000-year-old Lake Tyrrell doubles the fun at sunset. Victoria's largest salt lake transforms with a colour burst of intense hue and light when the sun falls low. Get set to flood your Insta feed with this beauty.
