With more than 55 events over seven days and nights, this year's Festival was a true celebration of the riches of jazz. The unparalleled 2009 Melbourne International Jazz Festival included six world-premieres and ten Australian premieres with a rich program to delight everyone from dedicated jazz enthusiasts to families and first-time concertgoers. Celebrating the dynamic spirit of jazz, the Festival hosted iconic masters including Charlie Haden, Bill Frisell, Cecil Taylor and Joshua Redman as well as Katie Noonan, Paul Grabowsky, Kate Ceberano and many more contemporary virtuosos from Australia and beyond. There were free concerts at Federation Square, Jazz for Kids, Masterclasses, Sound Walks at the NGV, Jazz on Film at ACMI, late night jam sessions, and much much more.
