| Located on Port Melbourne's lively Bay Street, the Chapel Bakery is a combination of old-world provincial cafe and modern Melbourne lunch spot. The interior features a pleasing mix of polished timber floors and bistro tables and chairs, but the room is dominated by wrought iron baker's stands, which are laden with loaves. The hand-moulded breads are baked daily in the historic masonry ovens of the atmospheric Abbotsford Convent.
The cafe is influenced by the indulgent patisseries of France, with novelty cakes, vanilla slices and Parisian breakfast platters overflowing with danishes and chocolate and almond croissants. The simple breakfast and lunch menu ranges from BLTs sandwiched between fresh sourdough, to rustic panini, piadina wraps, vegetarian calzone, stone-baked Turkish pide, pizzas and salads.
Despite the sinful array of rich pastries, cookies and muffins, Chapel still has a certain emphasis on healthy ingredients with a bevy of naturally produced juices, teas, coffee and even organic sugar on offer.
