For most of us, Chinatown is a source of culinary rather than educational enrichment but the Chinese Museum serves up quite a cultural banquet. Established in 1985 to document and preserve the extensive history of Australia’s Chinese community, displays encompass everything from Gold Rush artefacts to the work of contemporary artists. The museum is also home to Melbourne’s Millennium Dragon which winds a colourful trail through the city streets during Chinese New Year celebrations. Meanwhile, visitors seeking a more in-depth experience can embark on a heritage walking tour, or enrol in weekend classes.
