Omeo is a pioneering mountain town in Gippsland along the Great Alpine Road, known for its gold mining history, high country cattle grazing and historic buildings, including the post office, court house, pub, and 1858 gaol built of logs.

  • Visit the A.M. Pearson Historical Park to see the town's original courthouse (1865), post office (1890s), log lockup (1858), blacksmith shop, stables and waterwheel
  • Take the wine and gold drive from Omeo or Swifts Creek and discover the Cassilis historical area, once among the richest goldfields in the state
  • Walk or drive from the Omeo township to the Oriental Claims historic area which to this day remains the highest alluvial gold field in Australia
  • Take in panoramic views of the Victorian alps and surrounding countryside at the Kozsciusko Lookout just outside the town along the Great Alpine Road
  • Four-wheel drive along the 17-kilometre Knocker Track
  • Fish for trout in the nearby Mitta Mitta and Cobungra rivers
  • Join a white water rafting trip down the Mitta Mitta River
  • Walk through spring wildflowers on the Bogong High Plains
  • In winter, spend a day cross-country skiing at nearby Dinner Plain or head to Mount Hotham for its magnificent downhill runs just 40 minutes away.
