Melbourne International Arts Festival has an outstanding reputation for presenting unique international and Australian attractions in the fields of dance, theatre, music, opera, visual arts, free and outdoor events.

In 2008, the event runs for 17 days from 9 – 25 October, with performances throughout Melbourne.

First staged in 1986, the festival became the third in the Spoleto Festival series – joining Spoleto, Italy, and Charleston, United States. The name was changed in 1990 to the Melbourne International Festival of the Arts. The Artistic Director for 2005 - 2008 is Kristy Edmunds.
