| A devastating blaze gutted the interior of Melbourne's historic GPO building on Bourke Street Mall several years ago. Thankfully retaining the classic facade, the new GPO centre is a stylish mecca combining designer fashion, body care and fine dining. Still in metamorphosis, with new boutiques frequently opening, one of GPO's recent culinary additions is the Florentine food and wine bar, Nostro Baretto. Built into one side of the GPO arcade, Nostro Baretto spreads out along a paved promenade which, shielded from rain by metallic scaffolds, provides an alfresco dining experience with an industrial edge. Although limited indoor seating is available, outdoor tables are well heated and provide a passing view of the Little Bourke Street laneway, bustling with retail activity.
Fast becoming a favoured destination for city workers, Nostro Baretto is open daily for lunch and for dinner on Fridays (soon to become a nightly event during the warmer evenings of Spring and Summer.) The menu, however, is far from quick lunch fare. Forming part of the decor, it is written up on chalkboard displays and changes completely each week. Rotations range from entrees of wild rocket salad or peasant-style tomato and lentil soup to mushroom, Taleggio and truffle oil raviolone with semi-dried tomato mash as a side. Nostro Baretto strictly sticks to genuinely Italian dishes, refusing to serve simple burgers or generic desserts, instead enticing the palate with a traditional creamy lemon tart or a chilled zabaglione and an extensive wine list available by the glass.
