Swimming – Phillip Island

Cape Woolamai

Swim at beaches on the north shores of Phillip Island, or catch a wave at one of the excellent surf beaches on the ocean (south) side. The ocean beaches include Woolamai, a popular surf location noted for strong rips and currents, and Smiths Beach, a surf beach located on a bay and suited to families. Both beaches are patrolled in summer.

If you are planning a family day on the beach or are not a strong swimmer, head to the calmer waters and coves on the sheltered north side of the island. One of the most popular beaches is located on the Esplanade at Cowes.

Note: Surf beaches on the south of the Island can be very dangerous at times. Please beware of rips and do not swim alone. The Woolamai Surf Beach, Smiths Beach and Cowes Beach are patrolled during the summer school holidays.
