Overview

Winter warmers

Winter: crisp days, chilly evenings, and all the excuse you ever needed to curl up with a book or a bold red by an open fire, pamper yourself at a luxury day spa, escape an afternoon in an art gallery and cocoon yourself in a cosy cabin. We have all the red wine, regional galleries, fireside dining tables and weekend getaways you need for a winter wander.

Wine time

Warm up this winter with all that is red at a cosy cellar door. We have some 600 to tide you over, with spectacular winter wines across our 20 wine regions.

This is the season to pick out your favourite pinot, single out your dream sangiovese, settle in with a robust shiraz or durif, and sweeten it all with a perfectly aged muscat.

Pair up with your favourite designated driver and wander the wine regions.

Pinot perfection
Plot your path to the perfect pinot noir across the Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Macedon Ranges and Gippsland.

Pick your way through prize-winning pinots in the Yarra Valley wine region. Try wineries and vintages big and small, saving time for the renowned Tarrawarra, Rochford and De Bortoli cellar doors.

Pinot precision beckons too on the Mornington Peninsula. Exceptional pinot noir is almost a given, at small wineries and the region's heavyweights, including Port Phillip Estate, Montalto, T'Gallant and Crittenden Estate.

In the Macedon Ranges wine region, pick-nic an elegant pinot at Hanging Rock Winery and Passing Clouds.

Finally, let your pursuit of pinot take you to Gippsland. Here, stop for a drop Narjookee and Cannibal Creek.

Shiraz and durif
Bust the brrr with a bold red in the Heathcote, Bendigo, Rutherglen, Grampians and Geelong wine regions.

Start your shiraz circuit in serious red wine country: the Heathcote and Bendigo wine regions. The flagship varietal in the area since its early planting, the shiraz here is deservedly world famous.

In Rutherglen, you'll find the best durif. Most of the region's twenty wineries grow and produce the signature drop (along with shiraz), so knock on cellar doors to earn your tasting stripes.

Back on the shiraz trail, sample award-winning and iconic drops at Trentham Estate and Morrisons in Murray-Darling Swan Hill wine regions.

Head west to the Grampians wine region, where Best's Great Western and Mount Langhi Ghiran are among Australia's most acclaimed shiraz producers. Best of all, you can take your wine appreciation to new heights with a helicopter winery tour.

Complete the circuit in the Geelong wine region, where each July, wineries showcase their finest drops for the Winter Shiraz Weekend. The shiraz is matched with hearty fare and plenty of opportunities to relax fireside. Of course any winter weekend will work for a robust red at the region's 40 cellar doors.

Sangiovese
Into Italian varietals? Have a right royal time with the King Valley's signature sangiovese. Warm yourself with the region's red wines at the June Queen's Birthday weekend and throughout the winter over rustic Italian meals. Meet local characters at renowned wineries Dal Zotto and Pizzini and keep an eye out for winter wine events.

Muscat
Make like muscateers in Rutherglen and uncover the depth of world-renowned fortified wines. The Rutherglen wine region is famous for its muscat, which pairs just as perfectly with savoury starters as it does rich desserts, Chesterfields and open fires. By day, cycle the banks of the Murray River to wineries along the Muscat Trail, by night, settle into cosy cellar door bars and restaurants.

Fireside

Morning coffee, lazy lunch, indulgent dinner or decadent dessert wine, everything tastes better by an open fire in winter. Discover cafes, restaurants, cellar doors and worth rem-ember-ing in villages around Victoria.

Our open-fire favourites for a tipple include Tarrawarra Estate, Port Phillip Estate and Jack Rabbit (for the Fireside Jazz Series), Daylesford Cider Co., and the Cosmopolitan Hotel, Trentham.

For breakfast, lunch and wine, relax at all-rounder Merricks General Wine Store, and for fireside dining, settle in at the Royal Mail Hotel, Dunkeld; Coonara Springs, Olinda or The Shearing Shed, Cowes.

Galleries

Warm and well-lit, galleries are perfect for whiling away blustery afternoons and escaping to other-wordly places of imagination. Explore the major galleries in regional cities. Bendigo Art Gallery and the Gallery of Ballarat, two of Australia's oldest and largest regional galleries, have excellent exhibitions and permanent collections always worth a wander, as do regional galleries in Horsham, Hamilton, Morwell, Bairnsdale, Benalla and Swan Hill.

For a contemporary art fix, wander to start-of-the-art galleries Art at Linden Gate (Yarra Glen), Tarrawarra Museum of Art (Healesville) and MAMA (Albury). Seek out smaller galleries, too, tucked away in villages: The Lost Ones (Ballarat), Bokeh Gallery (Daylesford), Stockroom (Kyneton), Queenscliff Gallery and Workshop, Healesville Glass Blowing Studio and Gordon Studio Glassblowers (Red Hill).

Cocooning

Wrap yourself in comfort and cocoon yourself in the comfort of a cosy cabin, bed-and-breakfast, resort or spa. Lose yourself in a book by the fireplace, indulge in pampering treatments and treat yourself to local, seasonal fare. Whatever your preferred cocoon, we have the winter hideaway.

Pamperers, book in a treatment at the Peninsula Hot Springs, Saltair Day Spa Torquay or endota Red Hill. Or put the treat in retreat with a whole weekend at a spa resort. Venture to spa country and indulge at Peppers Mineral Springs or Shizuka Ryokan, Hepburn Springs, and the Lake House, Daylesford. On the Mornington Peninsula, Woodman Estate has your wellness all wrapped up, and in the Yarra Valley, Balgownie Estate covers wine and wellness. Win-win. Further afield, venture to The Esplanade Resort and Spa at Lakes Entrance or Circa 1936 in Corowa.

Wine aficianados, for luxury accommodation that's not too far a wander from a cellar door, look at winter winery getaways such as Port Phillip Estate, Red Hill and Lakeside Villas at Crittenden Estate.

For country comfort, embrace a warm welcome at bed-and-breakfasts in villages across Victoria, from Glen Isla House, Cowes to Montford Manor, Traralgon, and experience classic hotel hospitality at Walhalla's Star Hotel.

DIY-ers, get away from it all and cocoon yourself in self-contained cabins, villas and apartments, ranging from luxury appointed DULC in Halls Gap to family- and pet-friendly Country House Retreat in Nungurner, Gippsland.
