Stay and play in Victoria's alpine region. On and off mountain, at après-ski bars and local day spas, neighbouring wineries and village breweries, at restaurants with hats and cafes with snow-caps, there's snow end of adventures to be had.
Sign up for a full on-mountain black-run binge or, if you're more snowplough than snow bunny, stay and play: get cosy in mountainside villages and play on the slopes just for the day. Take a spin on a chair lift, hit the slopes, try the toboggan run, pick a snowball fight, make a snowman and retreat to sub-alpine villages to, well, chill.
Our alpine-region villages are perfect for relaxing and warming your fingers and toes before a trip to the snow. You'll find perfectly cosy accommodation to bunker down in, and host of restaurants and bars, attractions and spas to venture out to.
Close to the mountains, they're easy to get to, and have plenty of places to hire gear (everything from gloves to chains) for a visit to the slopes. Snow problem.
Head for the hills and explore our favourite winter places to stay and play.
Mansfield and Mount Buller
Wake up to freshly roasted single origin beans and blends at Mansfield Coffee Merchant, and get your eggs on artisan breads in Mansfield Regional Produce Store (stock up on regional produce and wine while you're there). Take a hot air balloon, or just your car, to the Tin Shed Cider cellar door, try a tipple or two at Delatite Wines, or stay in town for beer and pizza at Social Bandit Brewing Co.
Outdoors, get up close to lions, wallabies and alligators at Mansfield Zoo, Victoria's largest regional zoo.
Play: Mt Buller
Take a scenic chair-lift ride, slip on some ski shoes, slide behind a dog sled, ski or board the slopes then relax with schnapps at alpine bars.
Bright, Hotham and Dinner Plain
Chase waterfalls, wine and great coffee at Ginger Baker Wine Bar & Cafe, or go retro with handmade treats at 1950s inspired cafe Coral Lee. For singular indulgence make your way to Bright Chocolate and sample its single origin chocolate. Save room for the inspired Asian flavours at Tani Eat & Drink and the renowned Italian culinary delights at Simone's, one of Victoria's most celebrated restaurants.
Tipple time: order a craft brew with a view at Bright Brewery, mix it up at the Grape and Grain Bar, or put on your tasting shoes for a tour of the Alpine Valleys wine region (as Bright as Billy Button Wines).
Play: Hotham and Dinner Plain
Try snow tubing, luge toboganning, snowmobiling (as well as skiing or boarding) at Hotham before you hit the bars and restaurants. In Dinner Plain, village walks, sled dog tours and a visit to the Japanese-inspired Onsen Retreat and Spa are a plain good idea before or after snow play.
Mount Beauty and Falls Creek
Stay: Mount Beauty
Schnapps up herring, meatballs and local produce at Swedish cafe and produce store Skafferi at Svarmisk, sitting pretty on the site of the former Mount Beauty Chalet. Add a premium cool-climate sparkle to your afternoon at Annapurna Wines, paint it red at Ceccanti Kiewa Valley Wines or pause for a pinot at Bogong Estate. For a frothy straight from the brewhouse and views straight onto Mt Bogong, take the short, sweet trip to local microbrewery Sweetwater Brewing Company.
Play: Falls Creek
Sign up for a snow-shoe shuffle, zoom around on a snowmobile, and explore bars and restaurants. On Thursdays, stick around to see the day out with a bang: skiiers and boarders join Pete the Snow Dragon for a family-friendly show and fireworks.
