Overview

With its thriving bike culture and a dizzying mix of bike-friendly terrain, Victoria is best seen on two wheels. See the city sights on a Melbourne Bike Share bike, explore the network of trails and tracks linking regional Victorian towns, or take it up a notch with downhill mountain biking and road racing.

City cycling

Designated bike lanes across the city make riding an easy and safe experience for locals and travellers alike. Rent a Bike Share bike to travel around the CBD or cruise the outer suburbs via the Capital City Trail, Williamstown Path or Bayside Cycling Trail.

Regional riding

Calling all adventure riders! Try a spot of road riding along the Great Ocean Road, get dirty with a mountain bike ride through the Goldfields Track, or tackle the High Country's notorious 'Dirty Dozen'.

Alternatively, take it easy and follow a regional rail trail like the Great Victorian Rail Trail, stopping by cellar doors and farm gates to sample gourmet local produce. If you're riding in autumn, consider the Great Alpine Road, with its sweeping alpine views and beautiful autumn foliage. There are also plenty of trails close to town, like the Lake Wendouree Loop Ride: a 10km circuit that runs through central Ballarat.

Explore Gippsland

Not sure where to start your adventure? Try Gippsland in the state's east, particularly in autumn, when the summer sun has died down. Not only do you get some of the best produce in Victoria, but there are seven glorious rail trails to explore, plus nine dedicated mountain bike trails. Pedal your way along the Bass Coast and the Gippsland Plains, or down the slopes of Mt. Baw Baw. Wherever you go, you're never far from a great post-ride dinner.

Safety first

Be sure to follow the road rules and wear bright clothing when cycling. Helmets are compulsory, and night riders must affix a light to their bikes and wear reflective clothing.

Plan before you go

Make sure you check weather and terrain conditions and pack plenty of water before you embark on an outdoor adventure. Keep up-to-date with the latest warnings and advice via the Parks Victoria and Vic Emergency websites.
