Film: Wander Victoria
Location: Seppelt Great Westen
Address: 36 Cemetery Road, Great Western
Above ground, Seppelt Great Western has a vineyard planted with super-premium, cool-climate shiraz, in one of the oldest continuously producing wine regions in Australia. Set against the backdrop of the Grampians' craggy peaks, the winery lays claim to the birth of Australia's sparkling red wine style.
Below ground, Seppelt will take you on an unlikely drive. After the original vineyard was established in 1865, in 1868, miners began work on a network of underground tunnels used for wine maturation. Now famously known as "drives", by 1932 the underground cellars had reached three kilometres in length. These days they hold enough wine to drive a person to, well, drink. This can be accommodated on underground tours, which offer the opportunity to wine and dine deep within.
