Overview

Local produce

Known as Victoria's food bowl, The Murray region's combination of rich soils, sunny Mediterranean climate and river water for irrigation ensure an endless supply of fruit and vegetables, gourmet cheeses, nuts and excellent freshwater fish.

Trail snacks

Start your foodie adventure with a self-guided tour of the Farm Gate Trail, passing through Yarrawonga Mulwala, Cobram Barooga and Barmah Koondrook. Make it a day trip or do the full three-day itinerary at your own pace, sampling everything from farm fresh fruit to artisan chocolates, gourmet cheeses and craft beers.

Hop on and off other food trails depending on where your appetite guides you. Choose from 40 wineries, restaurants and pubs along the Echuca Moama Food and Wine Trail, or turn off the highway and onto the Backroads Trail where it's all about old-fashioned country hospitality.

Edible treasures

Indulge in a huge range of fresh fruit and vegetables, olives and nuts at roadside stalls, farmers' markets or local cafes. Fill your basket for the journey home or stay longer and sample fresh local produce cooked up in inventive ways at renowned restaurants, wineries and country cafes. For something a little different, join locals and discover the joys of bread making and slow food at the Community Wood Fired Oven Wodonga.

Cast a line in the river or pop into food stores, cafes and restaurants to take advantage of the abundant local freshwater fish, including yabbies, Murray crays, trout and the famed Murray cod.

A foodies getaway

Recharge and replenish your stocks in Mildura. Stefano's cafe and food store, 27 Deakin, is a good starting point where you can order a picnic hamper filled with the best regional produce. Travel south to Swan Hill, the home of Australia's stone fruit industry and look out for farm gates along the Murray Valley Highway to stock up on nectarines, peaches, pistachios, almonds and olives.
