Come to where the rivers meet and find a town brimming with historic importance. Witness the merging of the Murray and Darling rivers from the observation tower, sandboard down the Perry Sandhills, and learn about Aboriginal heritage in a tour of the majestic Mungo National Park.

A tale of two rivers

Travel back in time with a ride on the P.S. Ruby Wentworth, an original Murray River paddle steamer that first hit the water back in 1907. Afterwards, enjoy a walking tour along the river's edge and imagine the busiest inland port in NSW during the paddle-steamer era.

Climb the viewing tower at Junction Park and look out over the confluence of Australia's two largest rivers, which make up the fourth largest river system in the world. Alternatively, book a spot on board a Wentworth River Cruise for a closer look.

Grab a map from the information centre and admire restored historic buildings across town, such as the Old Wentworth Gaol built in 1881.

Ancient landscapes

Take a drive out of town to the magnificent Perry Sandhills, 400 acres of rolling red sandhills that are more than 40,000 years old. Try your hand at sandboarding or just admire the striking sunset view. For an unforgettable experience, time your trip to coincide with one of the popular concerts under the stars.

Visit the Australian Inland Botanic Gardens and wander among the wide array of plants and flowers. Set among 48 landscaped hectares, it is the first semi-arid botanical garden in the Southern Hemisphere.

Join a tour led by an Aboriginal guide and learn about the ancient heritage of Mungo National Park. The famous 42,000 year old Mungo Lady and Mungo Man were uncovered here and the place holds an important place in archaeological history.

Enriching adventures

The Murray-Darling provides a wonderful outlet for swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking and house boating. Apex Beach is a popular sandy stretch, while sunset guided tours are available on Kings Billabong – a calm wetland area and wildlife reserve. If you prefer to take it easy, play a round of golf at one of the town's two golf courses.
