Swim, ride, walk and paddle
Tocumwal is the perfect place to enjoy the best of the Murray. Take your pick of 24 riverside beaches close to town and soak up the outdoor lifestyle. Pitch a tent and then stretch the legs on a bushwalk. Sign up for a horse riding trip, cast a line for Murray cod or watch native birds in the trees. And then hit the water for some canoeing and swimming.

Keep an eye out for myriad species of native birds on a quiet bushwalk by the river, or visit the nearby Ulupna Island, a flora and fauna reserve, to see koalas and kangaroos in their natural habitat.
Heartland
Tocumwal takes its name from the Aboriginal word, 'Tocumival', meaning 'deep hole', a reference to a waterhole in the area sacred to local Aboriginal people. When settled, it was used as a river port, and it quickly became a major transport centre for the region's agricultural products.
During World War II, Tocumwal Aerodrome also became the largest RAAF training base in the Southern Hemisphere and was used as a training base for Liberator bomber pilots.
