Shearwater Festival

25 - 27 Nov 2016

The Shearwater Festival is an annual event that aims to develop partnerships, cross cultural understanding and environmental awareness about the short-tailed Shearwater population of Phillip Island.

Festival activities include a street procession, creative, cultural and environmental workshops, a participative dance ritual, music and dance performances and environmental walks and talks.

Phillip Island is home to a colony of short-tailed shearwater birds. Each year in April and May, the Shearwaters migrate north, across the Western Pacific, to the Bering Sea around the Aleutian Islands of Alaska, USA.

In September and October, the birds return to South-East Australia, where they breed over the summer months.

Short-tailed Shearwaters are an important aspect of local indigenous culture.
