Overview

Boasting rugged coastlines, sandy bay beaches and historic gardens, friendly seals and weedy sea dragons, the Mornington Peninsula has plenty to keep nature lovers excited and inspired.

Coastal waters and old world elegance

Take in fabulous views from Arthurs Seat or Point Nepean. You can explore the gentle bay beaches surrounding Port Phillip Bay or survey the wild ocean waters of Bass Strait from Gunnamatta and Cape Schanck. Revel in views round the coast to Portsea from Cape Schanck Lighthouse and then descend the boardwalk to the basalt rocks below.

Enjoy a slow day at the Cranbourne Botanic Gardens, a family-friendly maze, or one of the manicured gardens housed in local mansions.

Wildlife on land, air and sea

Join an organised expedition and swim alongside dolphins and seals. Snorkel along the coast and in Port Phillip Heads Marine National Park where you’ll be surprised as the underwater panorama is revealed, including the colourful weedy sea dragons.

Hop aboard the passenger ferry to French Island, Victoria's koala capital, and spot protected wildlife roaming within the Mornington Peninsula National Park. Find kangaroos grazing at dusk around Sorrento Back Beach and Greens Bush, then spend a few hours at the Moonlit Sanctuary where you can discover almost-extinct native animals.

Boardwalks extend over Westernport's mangroves and the peninsula's protected wetlands, the perfect spot to greet myriad bird species.
