Melburnians can get a little dough-eyed about pizza. Friendly conversations about the 'best' can quickly turn to pizza-cutter duels at dawn. And with so many best-of categories, it's no surprise it's hard to settle on a winner. So unless you're harbouring a hangover and can't leave the house, avoid the chain gang and go out and get a slice of Melbourne's best.

Try the old-school goodness of family-friendly pizzerias in Lygon Street's Carlton, where Melbourne's love of pizza began at Toto's, Australia's first pizzeria. Join the locals queuing up for the world's best margheritas (so voted at Italy's pizza world championship) at 400 Gradi in Carlton North and try its Docklands sibling 90 Secondi.

Go gourmet a little further north at i carusi, the pizzeria credited with starting the artisan pizza revolution, and follow its creator to Kaprica. Ride the artisan wave right across town: try Fitzroy and Prahran's Ladro, Carlton's D.O.C., and Northcote's Pizza Meine Leibe and For the Love of Pizza. Get a dose of sourdough culture at Collingwood's Lazer Pig, and take a super appetite to North Fitzroy's Supermaxi and the CBD's +39. Try the Chris Lucas touch at Richmond's Baby Pizza and Karen Martini's classics at St Kilda's Mr Wolf.

If wallet-friendly trumps gourmet, you can't go past the super-cheap booze accompaniments at Bimbo Deluxe, Lucky Coq and Bar Fred.
