Fishing

Spend a relaxing day by the water and head home with dinner in the cooler. Whether it's bream in the Maribyrnong or snapper in the bay, you don't have to go far in Melbourne to find a great fishing spot.

What you'll find
Snapper is the big catch around Melbourne – it comes into Port Philip Bay as early as September and stays until around March. Flathead and whiting also populate the bay. Try your luck with  bream in the Yarra or the Maribynong rivers along the stretch between the river mouth at Williamstown and the junction with the Maribynong.

Where to go
Fishing in the bay is permitted from the piers at Port Melbourne, Middle Park, St Kilda, Brighton or Sandringham, or you can hire a motor boat and set out for a day on the water. If you'd rather be driven by someone else, join one of the organised fishing charters that operate in the bay.
