Overview

Art & culture

Be inspired by the vibrant creative community, exceptional works of local and international art, and maritime history to be discovered in towns and villages along the the Great Ocean Road.

Surf and turf

Visit a diverse range of museums that capture the Great Ocean Road region's rich maritime heritage and farming history and chronicle the rise of Australia's surfing legends.

Explore one of the many local museums dedicated to the region's maritime history including Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum, depicting life in a typical Australian seaport village between 1850 and 1900, and the Portland Maritime Museum, where you can explore treasures rescued from shipwrecks.

Community festivities

Join in the fun at cultural events all year round, from literary and music festivals to art exhibitions and historical events. Music fans will want to time their visit to coincide with the famous Port Fairy Folk Festival, Falls Festival or the Lorne Festival of Performing Arts.

Artists studios and Angry Penguins

Experience the flourishing art scene in galleries and cafes dotted throughout the Great Ocean Road region, from Torquay to Port Fairy. Visit large regional galleries at Warrnambool to see works by some of Australia's finest artists or pop into small private galleries and potteries to get a glimpse of local contemporary talent.

Port Fairy has a growing reputation for its arts and crafts and with more than a dozen galleries and studios open to the public, it's easy to see why. Pick up a Port Fairy Art Map at the Visitor Information Centre and start exploring. Browse gallery collections or visit the artists at work in their own studios. You'll find a wide range of arts including paintings, sculpture, glass, ceramics and jewellery, and the galleries are often housed in beautiful historic buildings. Be sure to stop off at the Whale Bone Gallery too, an artists' co-operative that showcases some of the region's best creative work.

Wander through galleries in Lorne and Apollo Bay and check out the wide variety of local art, including oil and watercolour, pottery and photography. Or head further along the coast to the renowned Warrnambool Art Gallery, which houses a diverse collection of works, from elegant European salon paintings to examples of avant-garde modernism from the Angry Penguins movement.
