Overview

Complete your Great Ocean Road journey at Nelson, and explore the Discovery Coast, Glenelg River and Princess Margaret Rose Cave. Wander along remote ocean beaches, take a river cruise and experience the beauty of the surrounding Lower Glenelg National Park. When exploring Nelson, you're a visitor on the lands of the Gunditjmara People.

Cruise up the river

Take a leisurely boat ride up the Glenelg River, which winds 400 kilometres from the ocean at Nelson up to the Grampians Ranges in the north. It's ideal for canoeing and fishing and there are boat launching ramps at several points along the river or you can hire a canoe in town. Sign up for a river cruise and make your way through the spectacular limestone gorge, up to 50 metres deep in places.

Rugged coastal wilderness

Take in the splendour of Discovery Bay on the ocean side of Nelson. Marvel at the massive sand dunes on the 50-kilometre long beach – some of the largest in Victoria. Surf the mighty waves of the wild Southern Ocean or get up close to native flora and fauna on a relaxing stroll along a section of the Great South West Walk.
