New from old

Leave the Western Highway at Ballarat for the Sunraysia Highway and Waubra, site of one of the largest wind power projects in Australia. Refresh and recharge at the nearby Quoin Hill Vineyard, which has converted old stables into a cellar door/tasting room offering refreshments and lunches on weekends.

Continue on up the B220 highway to the quaint village of Lexton. Pick up a copy of the Historic Town Walk brochure from the Community Centre and stretch your legs while you explore. Get a feel for one of Victoria's earliest inland towns and discover its picturesque valley.

Gold rush history and vineyards

Avoca is just a short drive down the highway. Use it as a base to uncover what's on offer at the renowned wineries of the Pyrenees. Avoca's broad streets and characteristic architecture bring to life the days of the mid-19th century gold rush. The main street hosts galleries, antique shops and eateries and is surrounded by over 30 wineries, including some of Australia's most established brands.

To continue your historic tour of the region take a short drive across to St Arnaud to visit the olde-world character and charm associated with its rich history.

Changing landscapes

Make your way on to Stawell for something different. Take a tour of the town and visit the Stawell Gift Hall of Fame before driving on to Halls Gap. Stop of for an hour or two and choose from Halls Gap Zoo, Brambuk – The National Park and Cultural Centre, or the sweeping vistas of Boroka Lookout.

The journey home

Travel southeast, back to Ballarat through the towns of Ararat and Beaufort. Take a short drive to One Tree Hill scenic lookout in Ararat on your way and experience the 360 degree views of the Grampians and Pyrenees ranges.
