Local attractions
Visit regional towns for a great variety of family attractions, from the Volcanoes Discovery Centre at Penshurst to the kid-friendly Gum San Chinese Heritage Centre in Ararat, and the animal encounters at the Halls Gap Zoo.
Some towns also have great indoor play centres, ten pin bowling and heated swimming pools with kid-friendly zones. Outdoor swimming pools are popular in the warm summer months – and look out for ice creameries!
For a joyful weekend of food, music and fun activities, bring the kids to one of the many cultural festivals throughout the year. Visit in October to make the most of the 3 Peaks Festival in Dunkeld, with its market stalls and upbeat entertainment, and laid-back performances at the Halls Gap's Blues and Jazz Festival.
Scenic walks
Embark on easy, shaded walks, some on sealed paths, admiring wildflowers in the spring-time, watching for glimpses of native wildlife, and cooling off in the spray from impressive waterfalls. Try Silverband Falls near Halls Gap, the path beside Lake Hamilton, the picnic grounds beside the Wimmera or the Avoca River, and the botanical parks of Ararat, Hamilton and Horsham.
Head further afield to one of the Grampians' many scenic lookouts. Take the easy way and cruise up by car to lookouts at Boroka, Reed and Mt William. Alternatively, make an afternoon of it and walk up to mounts Sturgeon and Stapylton, Boronia Peak, or The Pinnacle. Check walking times to make sure they're the right fit for your age and fitness.
Camping and canoes
Picnic spots adjacent to waterfalls, tall timber, rocky outlets and scenic beauty are never far away in the region's many parks and reserves.
Camping has been a family activity in the Grampians for generations, and it's no wonder with the well-equipped campgrounds on some of the region's best real estate. And if you're bringing a tent, why not bring a canoe or kayak as well? Head out on the water to explore the different lakes, waterways and myriad bird life.
