Located in the middle of the Western Highway between Melbourne and Adelaide on the lands of the Wotjobaluk, Jaadwa, Jadawadjali, Wergaia and Jupagulk peoples of the Wotjobaluk Nations, Great Western was settled by sheep graziers in the 1840s, then grew following the discovery of gold and later the planting of its now famous grape vines. The area boasts a crop of pioneering wineries, earning it a reputation for producing some of Australia's finest wine.
Sample varietals in Best's red gum tasting room and take a tour of the incredible hand-dug cellar, built back in the 1860s. Next stop is Seppelt's, where you can head underground and explore the three kilometres of labyrinthine tunnels or 'drives', which house the maturing sparkling wine. Share a bottle of Grampians Estate's famous sparkling shiraz and a cheese platter at the cellar door.

See how the grape is revered by all when you pause a while in Great Western village. Visit Stone Cutter's Cottage and tuck into elegant dishes inspired by the region's excellent wine. After lunch, amble leisurely past the town's historic local churches and buildings.
