Fit for a queen
Be captivated by the superbly restored heritage buildings in Ballarat and Bendigo. Catch a show at Her Majesty's Theatre in Ballarat, which has been entertaining audiences for more than 125 years, or see a theatre performance in Bendigo's immaculately restored Capital Theatre. Built in 1873, the Capital Theatre was the largest hall in Victoria, other than the Melbourne Town Hall.
Cat Power to spider dances
Castlemaine's Theatre Royal is also well worth a visit. The oldest continuously operating theatre in Victoria, this much-loved venue has hosted international talent including Cat Power and Gillian Welch, and it was here that Lola Montez performed her daring spider dance to a boisterous crowd of miners.
Old greets new
Bendigo's newest theatre, the Ulumbarra, is ensconced in the grounds of the historic Sandhurst Gaol. The 900-plus seat venue has an impressive line-up of local and international performers on its program.
Visit the beautiful village of Eaglehawk and catch independent, arthouse and popular flicks in the crimson couches of the historic Star Cinema. With its original production room in use, a visit to the Star provides a grand sense of history combined with modern comforts.
