Gippsland Plains Rail Trail

Stratford to Tinamba

Upon its completion, the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail will be a 67 km recreational trail following the former historic Gippsland Plains railway line route from Stratford to Traralgon. Currently, the 18 km stretch from Stratford to Tinamba is suitable for all users with a high quality new surface. The trail passes through undulating dairy country, has views of the Great Dividing Range and there are a number of villages along the way to stop for a rest and a snack or to explore.

Distance:
18 km one way
Track: Generally smooth dirt or gravel track
Grade: Level 1 – No experience required, suitable for beginners and children.
Start: Apex Park, Stratford
Finish: Town centre, Tinamba
Note: This rail trail is like a freeway for bikes between Stratford and Tinamba. It will eventually go all the way from Stratford to Traralgon but at the moment it is still a work in progress. If you wish to ride past Tinamba, you will need a mountain bike to travel over some rocky sections, and be prepared to ride on the road at a few intervals including the last 11 km into Traralgon from Glengarry.

Getting there: Travel via Monash Freeway (M1) and Princes Highway (A1) to Stratford approximately 230 km east of Melbourne. The ride starts in Apex Park, which is on the right just across the Avon River Bridge on the way into town. V/Line also runs a regular train service to Bairnsdale from Melbourne, stopping at Stratford.
