Overview

Point Lonsdale

Breathe in the sea air, listen to the waves, and while away days on the foreshore at this little hamlet on the tip of the peninsula. The picture of seaside tranquillity, complete with historic lighthouse, surf break and calm bay waters, Point Lonsdale has long been a favourite for holidaymakers.

Bayside

Take a dip at the sheltered bay beach with its pleasant foreshore reserve and barbecue facilities or cut up the waves on the back beach. Wander along Point Lonsdale Pier and revel in views of the lighthouse and the surrounding coastline, or bring your rod and reel and cast a line off the pier.

Reward the day's efforts with a quiet coffee at one the cafes along the esplanade, enjoy an afternoon sipping international wines at Nobel Rot Wine Bar, or check out the local shops and boutiques on a wander down main street.

Local history

Learn about local marine history with a tour of the famous Point Lonsdale lighthouse, used to guide big ships through the treacherous waters of The Rip. Visit the cave of 'Wild White Man' William Buckley, an escaped convict who lived for 32 years with the local Aboriginal population and reputedly sheltered in a cave under the lighthouse.

High drama

View the dramatic scenery from high points along the ocean foreshore of Point Lonsdale, overlooking The Rip. This notorious entrance to Port Phillip Bay, where ocean and bay waters collide through a kilometre-wide outlet, creates one of the world's most dangerous stretches of water.
